Skiing South America on a Budget

August 8th, 2007 · 2 Comments

Often the most expansive part of skiing in South America is the cost of getting down here. If you plan on getting a job good luck. Jobs for gringos are few and far between and if you do land a job it will pay much lower then what you are probably accustom to. There are however, a number of ways of cutting down on expenses. Here are some ideas.

1. Plan your trip on your own - By cutting out the cost of a tour group you can save yourself thousands of dollars.
2. Post up at one resort for the season - Once you have found an apartment and bought a season pass the cost of living will be vary low.
3. Stay out of Chile - Argentina is comparatively much cheaper then Chile.
4. Drink cheap wine - The wine in South America is quite good and much cheaper then hard booze and most beers.
5. Cook for yourself - If you take every opportunity to make food and not eat out you will find that you will have extra starch for the nightclubs and lift tickets.
6. Make sure you pack correctly - Ski gear in South America costs much more then in North America or Europe so if you forget something you will pay double for it once you are down here.
7. Skype - Get it and use it.

Cost of Living: Depending on where you stay, a bed in most South American ski towns should run you between 200 and 600 US dollars a month. Season passes go for about a grand, give or take, depending on the resort. Daily expanses are about 10 dollars or less. A goodnight out will run you 10-100 dollars depending on how crazy you want to get.
