Valley Nevado

Overview

Valle Nevado is the largest and most posh ski resort located near downtown Santiago. The resort, which consists of a hotel complex but no real town, is located 1 hour from the city center. It is accessed by a single road, which makes about 50 death-defining switchbacks as it climes higher and higher up into the Andes. Chains of often required for all cars and trucks so most people opt to buy a bus ticket from Skitotal, which runs about $20 dollars for a round trip. The resort open it’s doors 1988 so many of the facility’s are fairly modern. One really nice feature is the Andes Express, the first high-speed quad in South America.

Terrain
Located at 10,000 feet (summit 12,037 feet), Valle Nevado is entirely above the tree line. Because of this the terrain consists of wide-open bowls with a hand full of chutes ranging in pitch from very gentle to about 50 degrees. Beginners will find a runs accessed by surface lifts but the majority of terrain is geared toward intermediate to lower advanced. For expert skiers and riders the resort offers Heli-skiing. However, if you are looking for a cheaper way to make the most of your Valle Nevado experience, find a local who can take you into the backcountry or show you the route that leads down the access road for long untracked lines. Valle Nevado also offers an open ticket, which allows you to ski the interconnected resorts of La Prava and El Colorado.
